Personalize Your Wedding with Your Own Wedding Vows

Tags: toasts & speeches, etiquette

When you get married there is a lot of focus on what everyone is wearing, where you will get married, and who will be invited. During all of the planning one thing that many forget about is the actual wedding vows. It’s ironic that this is something that doesn’t receive more attention throughout the planning process because the words that a man and a woman speak to one another are what the whole ceremony is all about. The majority of people out there simply use generic vows, but if you would really like to personalize your wedding, you would write your own vows. Many wedding officiants do not like the idea of personalized vows, so before you take a lot of time, you should check with your officiant.

To write ones own vows takes some time, but it is a nice touch at a wedding because it allows for the bride and the groom to speak to one another from the heart, not just repeat something that has been said over and over by many people. Writing wedding vows can be nerve wracking but there are a lot of great books out there that will help you along the process. These books will give you some tips on where to start and perhaps how to create some very well written vows. The idea is to simply write some basic thoughts on a piece of paper about how you feel, where you want to go in your relationship, and what you hope for. If you sit down and write non stop for ten minutes without second guessing the ideas you will have some great material to work from. When you have these thoughts on paper you will then be able to apply the tips found in books and articles and piece together your own wedding vows.

There are many other aspects of the wedding that could be personalized in this way. Some other things that you may want to write yourself are toasts and speeches. Toasts and speeches are a great way to share your feelings with your bride or your groom and is also a classic way for friends and family members to congratulate the bride and groom. The same process should be used, free write for ten minutes, and then use a book or article to guide you through the process of writing your own toasts or speech so that you can say what you feel and what you mean in the most compelling manner. Writing vows, toasts, and speeches does take some work, but this personal touch is generally appreciated by all who have the opportunity to partake in the wedding festivities.
