How to Write Great Wedding Toasts

Tags: toasts & speeches, etiquette

If you have been selected as a bridesmaid, groomsman, best man, or maid of honor you probably will need to make a wedding toast. It can be nerve wracking to think of getting up in front of a crowd and congratulating the bride and groom, even if you know them both really well and wish them every happiness. The fact is, writing great wedding toasts is really simple if you keep it simple. Many people focus too much on what other people will think of their toast or speech when it really doesn’t matter what anyone thinks of what you say other than the bride and groom. If you keep that in mind and simply focus on what you would like to convey to the bride and groom you’ll have a lot easier time writing such a speech.

If you are trying to write wedding toasts you can pick up a couple books on the topic and get some ideas, but the idea is to keep it simple, and true to who you are and who the bride and groom are. If you get too fancy or formal you may feel awkward, which will just make you more nervous when you have the microphone in hand and you have to speak in front of everyone at the reception. Natural and simple are the best ideas.

To get started you may want to sit down with a pen and pencil and free write all of the feelings or ideas that you have. You should give yourself a time limit, such as 10 to 20 minutes and when this time has passed you should stop and read over what you have just written down. Chances are what you have written will be heart felt. When you do this you should not try to write the speech as you will say it on the wedding day, instead just write down thoughts as they come to you, in no particular order.

After you do this you will decide what ideas or statements you should keep and what should go. You should then piece the thoughts together in an eloquent but natural way and see what you come up with. You may just surprise yourself at how easy it was to write a wedding toast. When you write from the heart and you write the way you talk you will find that wedding toasts are not as difficult to write as many would have you believe.

When you have put together what you believe is a great wedding speech you should practice a couple times out loud in your home and then when you are ready you should practice on someone that you are comfortable with. When you practice with someone else they may be able to give you some pointers, or simply let you know that what you have written is great so that you can speak in front of a crowd with confidence.
